AFI Top 100 – #94: Pulp Fiction (1994)

We’re going through the AFI Top 100 list. #94 is Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.
TCM.com gives this synopsis:
An inside look at a memorable community of criminals. Prizefighter Butch Coolidge has decided to stop payment on a deal he’s made with the devil. Honey Bunny and Pumpkin are a couple of young lovers and small time thieves who decide they need a change of venue. Meanwhile, two career criminals, Vincent Vega and Jules, go about their daily business of shooting up other crooks who are late on payments to their boss. While one is asked to babysit their boss’ dangerously pretty young wife, the other suddenly realizes that he must give up his life of crime.
Tarantino is the master of dialogue. That’s the biggest thing that jumps out at me about this film. The characters are interesting and what happens in the film is interesting but oh, what dialogue!
I guess that’s the take-away for me. If I can’t be great at everything in this industry, I want to be great at ONE thing – one specific area of that ONE thing. And with Tarantino, that was enough to get him noticed.
With Inglorious Basterds, I feel like QT has improved on ALL levels – character, plot, and even dialogue. This also gives me hope. I can always improve.
If you haven’t seen Pulp Fiction, check it out. It’s not for kids. I always skip over the rape scene – pretty messed up. And the language is pretty rough at times. Watch responsibly.
This movie definitely deserves to be on the list. Though it might get edged out by Inglorious Basterds when they revise the list in a few years. Or maybe they both will be on the list. I’d be okay with that.
What other QT movies do you like?
