The Daws Brothers meet the Sherman Brothers

A few weeks ago, I was able to attend the grand re-opening of an attraction at Disneyland called Captain EO. I was covering the event for my friend, Ricky Brigante, who hosts an audio podcast about all things Disney but mostly Disney Theme Parks called Inside the Magic.
Last week, he got Josh and me access to another media event, this time covering a ceremony honoring Richard Sherman and Robert Sherman – The Sherman Brothers.
The Sherman Brothers wrote just about every classic Disney song you can think of plus many other non-Disney songs including the music to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as well as the song “You’re 16″ made famous by Ringo Starr.
They hold the honor of having written Walt Disney’s favorite song. It was a song written for Mary Poppins called Feed the Birds. They would sing the song for Walt when he was feeling down and he’d always have a tear in his eye. I remember reading in a biography of Walt about the last time they played it for him as he was dying of cancer. They knew it would be the last time. It makes me sad to think about.
Here is video of Richard Sherman singing and playing the song on Main Street.
Unfortunately, Robert Sherman wasn’t able to attend but he sent an audio message. The ceremony was beautiful. There were several actor/singers there who performed a medley of the Sherman Brothers’ most beloved songs. You can view the full ceremony by clicking here.
After the ceremony, Josh and I were able to interview Richard for just a few minutes. Richard had some great insights into how brothers can successfully work together. Check that out below.
This whole experience made me a little misty-eyed for a couple of reasons. First of all, hearing Richard Sherman sing Walt’s favorite song on Main Street in Disneyland was a moment I will never forget for the rest of my life. The song is so sweet and has such a great message of compassion for even the littlest creatures. I was so blessed to be there.
I also got misty-eyed because Richard and Robert were just two brothers with a crazy dream to do what they love. I was witnessing what can happen when you follow your dreams. And I was standing there on Main Street with my own brother. We have a crazy dream as well. I’m so glad we can share this adventure together.
Alright, enough of this gooey sh.. show of emotion.

Very cool, Jeremiah. It’s inspiring to see you and your bro (and Paul B.) pursuing your dreams and ‘taking the leaps’ necessary to do it. Cindy let me borrow a copy of your movie. I hope to watch it this week. Keep pushin’!
