TCM Picks of the Week – Dec 14-20, 2009

Every week we share our Turner Classic Movies picks of the week. Head on over to the TCM website to see the full schedule.
Lost Horizon (1937) – Monday 9:30pm EST
Four fugitives from a Chinese revolution discover a lost world of peace and harmony.
Cast: Ronald Colman, Jane Wyatt, Edward Everett Horton, John Howard Dir: Frank Capra BW-133 mins, TV-G
TCM’s December Frank Capra festival continues with one of his most unique. Lost Horizon is an adventure/fantasy film set in the mythical city of Shangri La. While it may not be your usual Capra setting, it deals with themes of social justice that were common in many of his films. I’m especially looking forward to the rest of the Capra films shown on Monday. I haven’t seen any of them!
Swiss Family Robinson (1960) – Tuesday 11:00am EST
Stranded on a deserted island, a close-knit family creates a tropical paradise.
Cast: John Mills, Dorothy McGuire, James MacArthur, Janet Munro Dir: Ken Annakin C-126 mins, TV-G
It would be easy to pick Gone With The Wind at 8pm on Tuesday, but seriously folks, if you haven’t seen Gone With The Wind, you should stop reading this right now and go buy it immediately. Swiss Family Robinson is early Disney live-action before it got silly. It really captured my imagination when I was young. I can’t tell you how badly I wanted to be shipwrecked on a deserted island.
Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The (1948) – Thursday 12:00am EST
Three prospectors fight off bandits and each other after striking-it-rich in the Mexican mountains.
Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt, Bruce Bennett Dir: John Huston BW-126 mins, TV-PG
One of my favorite Humphrey Bogart films, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a wonderful example of how a film can be wildly entertaining and still be an important examination of the human condition. In this case, how wealth can change us.
Star In The Night (1945) – Friday 1:08am EST
I mentioned this short in last week’s post, Top 5 Christmas Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen. Set your TiVos now! This short will make your Christmas season that much brighter.
Meet Me In St. Louis (1944) – Saturday 12:00pm EST
Young love and childish fears highlight a year in the life of a turn-of-the-century family.
Cast: Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien, Mary Astor, Lucille Bremer Dir: Vincente Minnelli C-113 mins, TV-G
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and see Judy Garland sing that song for the first time. This movie was Walt Disney’s inspiration for The Carousel of Progress and is also one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite films. Hard to believe, I know.
Ben-Hur (1959) – Sunday 4:00pm EST
While seeking revenge, a rebellious Israelite prince crosses paths with Jesus Christ.
Cast: Charlton Heston, Stephen Boyd, Jack Hawkins. Dir: William Wyler. C-222 mins, TV-PG
I wouldn’t be much of a Christian if I didn’t pick the most epic Christian film of all time.
