TCM Picks Of The Week – Dec 7-13, 2009

Every week we share our Turner Classic Movies picks of the week. Head on over to the TCM website to see the full schedule.
It Happened One Night (1934) – Monday 8:00pm EST
A newspaperman tracks a runaway heiress on a madcap cross-country tour.
Cast: Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert, Walter Connolly, Roscoe Karns Dir: Frank Capra BW-105 mins, TV-PG
TCM’s December Frank Capra festival kicks off with his first film to win the Best Picture Oscar. It’s probably the best romantic comedy ever made. Check it out and be sure to catch the rest of Mr. Capra’s films showing Monday night.
Face In The Crowd, A (1957) – Tuesday 10:15pm EST
A female television executive turns a folk-singing drifter into a powerful media star.
Cast: Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal, Anthony Franciosa, Walter Matthau Dir: Elia Kazan BW-126 mins, TV-PG
Andy Griffith before Mayberry. He delivers an incredible performance that is anything but Andy Taylor.
Dark Victory (1939) – Wednesday 2:15pm EST
A flighty heiress discovers inner strength when she develops a brain tumor.
Cast: Bette Davis, George Brent, Humphrey Bogart, Geraldine Fitzgerald Dir: Edmund Goulding BW-104 mins, TV-PG
We don’t see melodrama like this any more. I don’t think it would work today, but Dark Victory is a great example of what it used to be back in the glory days of melodrama. Bette Davis delivers an incredible performance as usual.
Christmas Carol, A (1938) – Saturday 12:00pm EST
In this adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, an elderly miser learns the error of his ways on Christmas Eve.
Cast: Reginald Owen, Gene Lockhart, Kathleen Lockhart, Terry Kilburn Dir: Edwin L. Marin BW-69 mins, TV-G
This is my favorite version of A Christmas Carol. The real life Lockhart family bring so much joy to their role as the Cratchets.
