TCM Picks Of The Week – Nov 23-29, 2009

Every week we share our Turner Classic Movies picks of the week. Head on over to the TCM website to see the full schedule.
Big Sleep, The (1946) – Tuesday 2:00pm EST
Private eye Philip Marlowe investigates a society girl’s involvement in the murder of a pornographer.
Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, John Ridgely, Martha Vickers Dir: Howard Hawks BW-114 mins, TV-PG
Perhaps THE definitive film noir. Bogey and Bacall are smoldering. Never has any couple had such incredible on screen chemistry.
Top Hat (1935) – Thursday 4:00pm EST
A woman thinks the man who loves her is her best friend’s husband.
Cast: Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Edward Everett Horton, Erik Rhodes Dir: Mark Sandrich BW-100 mins, TV-G
TCM is playing a whole bunch of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers films on Thursday. My favorite of the bunch is Top Hat. Great dance numbers and wonderful music. It’s the film that John Coffey watches in The Green Mile. Fred Astaire singing “Cheek to Cheek” is sublime.
Bedknobs And Broomsticks (1971) – Friday 8:00pm EST
An apprentice witch and three war orphans try to prevent the Nazi invasion of England.
Cast: Angela Lansbury, David Tomlinson, Roddy McDowall, Sam Jaffe Dir: Robert Stevenson C-117 mins, TV-G
Friday primetime features several films directed by the long-time Disney live action director, Robert Stevenson. Not sure why they picked the ones they did. Bedknobs is his follow up to Mary Poppins. Not nearly as good, but is good fun and features leftover songs that were written for Poppins.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) – Saturday 10:30am
Soulless pods take over the inhabitants of a small California town.
Cast: Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, Larry Gates, King Donovan Dir: Don Siegel BW-80 mins, TV-14
Wow. So hard to choose on Saturday. So many of my favorites. Just sit and watch all day. Body Snatchers wins my pick since they don’t show it that often. Scared me to death when I was a kid. I mean… eventually you HAVE to sleep. Ack!
Incredible Mr. Limpet, The (1964) – Sunday 2:00pm
A World War II 4-F saves the U.S. Navy when he’s transformed into a dolphin.
Cast: Don Knotts, Carole Cook, Jack Weston, Andrew Duggan Dir: Arthur Lubin C-99 mins, TV-G
I loved this as a kid, but have no idea if it holds up as an adult. You have been warned.
