Query Letters = Hopes and Dreams

I read all the email that comes into the main account at the production company where I intern. We get about 5 query letters per day by email and quite a few letters in the mail. The query letters are from people without representation (agents) who are trying to get the production company to read their scripts. These query letters represent the hopes and dreams of these screenwriters. I’ve been there. I’ve sent my share of query letters. It’s what the books tell you to do.

I’ve got news for all you hopeful screenwriters – no one reads these letters. They get ignored, deleted, or tossed in the trash. These companies have so many projects going on with people they actually know, they have no need to look at your script. Its sad but true. If you want to break in to the industry and get your script read by these people, move to LA and start networking. It’s not the news you want to hear. Its not the news I wanted to hear. But there it is.

Also, don’t try calling these places. Everyone in Hollywood has an assistant whose primary purpose is to keep you from talking to their boss. That’s part of my job. Please don’t hate me. ;-) Come out here and get to know these assistants personally and maybe they’ll let you through to their bosses. Maybe.
