Classic Film Recommendation
Posted by Josh on June 14th, 2006 @ 11:22 AM | Comments (0)

This is something I hope to make a regular thing. From time to time, I’m going to give you a classic film recommendation. First up is “Witness for the Prosecution.”

This classic from 1957 is directed by the great Billy Wilder. Based on an Agatha Christie short story, the film centers around a crusty old defense attorney played brilliantly by Charles Loughton. After getting out of the hospital after a heart attack, the doctor orders him not to take any stressful cases, but he just can’t resist when Tyrone Power shows up at his door accused of murder. Marlene Dietrich plays his devoted wife who shocks everyone when she becomes a witness for the prosecution.

I loved this movie. I just saw it a couple weeks ago. A truly memorable courtroom drama. Pay attention to the relationship between the Charles Loughton and his nurse. They have some great moments as she tries to keep him from unhealthy vices. Definitely check it out.

Fun Times in Orlando

I was in Florida last week visiting the beach and doing a few days at Disney World. The new ride at Animal Kingdom is amazing. It’s called Expedition Everest. Very impressive. If you ever need a good shot in the arm of creativity and inspiration, go to Walt Disney World. It’s the happiest place on Earth. :-)

I spent a day with my cousin, Paul in Orlando. He’s a computer animator. He introduced me to a colleague of his, Matthias Gloom. I thought I’d give a shout out and a plug to Matt’s website. It’s called SilentFright.com. He’s a graphic designer who has done some really impressive work. Check it out.

Little Sister Daws

Just a quick note. My sister, Jenny, has made her first film. She did it for The Christophers Scholarship competition. She wrote it, directed it, and produced it. I was along for help and I also served as the D.P. I must say, I’m very impressed with her abilities… especially since this is her first film. She’s only nineteen. I wish I was this good at that age. Though, she did have some professional help. ;-)

This makes me realize how valuable it is to get on-set experience. For all you young filmmakers out there trying to learn to direct, get on a real set. You’ll learn a TON. Jenny has been around for most of our shorts and has seen how we work. For me it was The Bail. Check it out on IMDB.com. Terrible film. I was a production assistant. (I think my name is even on there. Whoo hoo.) I learned more about the on set process than I could from reading a hundred books on the subject.

Anyway, check it out at this link. It’s called One Person Can Make a Difference.
